Hemp is the name most commonly given to fibre-producing cannabis which contains less than 0.3% THC and has no psychoactive effect when smoked or ingested.
It is usually cultivated on a large scale for the fibre and seeds. Both have numerous practical applications and so this use of hemp has gained the title Industrial. The seeds also have nutritional value.
Perhaps the most interesting fact about industrial hemp, especially when compared to trees or to other fibre crops, is its amazing versatility. It can supply oils for fuel or lubrication, plastics, paints and varnishes. The fibres create incredibly long lasting textiles of great tensile strength. Paper made from hemp pulp is the strongest, most flexible and most durable type available. Industrial hemp is also the most productive and efficient known source of biomass.
